Tesla Optimus

Optimus is Tesla's humanoid robot, which the company describes as a general-purpose, autonomous robot. As of July 2026 it does not yet have a production line running: at Fremont, Tesla dismantled the Model S and Model X lines to install the first line dedicated to Optimus, and a second is being set up at the Texas Gigafactory. In the July shareholder letter, the status of both is 'under construction', not 'in production'.

The first units are not for sale: Tesla assigns them to its own 'Optimus Academy', where they are used to collect training data and develop new capabilities. In its filings for investors, Tesla writes that it has not yet commercialised its robots and cannot predict demand for them, whether from businesses or individuals. There is no sales channel, market or official price.

Tesla announced the start of production by the end of 2026 in its January shareholder letter, and confirmed in July that it would happen 'later this year'. In its investor filings, it does not say what the robot sees and records, where its data ends up, or whether and when it will reach markets outside the United States.
