Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform, released under the Apache 2.0 licence and developed by the Open Home Foundation, a non-profit. It is installed on a device in the home — a small computer such as Home Assistant Green, or a server of your own — and from there it connects more than a thousand brands, controls Matter devices and runs automations locally: without internet, the rules keep working. It does not ask for an account with its developers; the Home Assistant Cloud subscription from Nabu Casa is optional and adds remote access, the link to Alexa and Google Assistant, and backups.

For a home with a robot, Home Assistant sees robot vacuums as «vacuum» entities, through Matter or through the brand's dedicated integration. Where the integration allows it, the zones defined in the robot's app can be mapped to Home Assistant areas, and an automation can send the robot to clean only those. In return, installing and maintaining the system falls to the person who runs it.
